Equities
In May trading in Equities on the Spanish Stock market amounted to €118.20 bn, which represents a 56% rise on the previous year. The figure marks the best trading figure since October 2008 and the seventh consecutive month of growth in trading volumes. The trading volume in the first five months of the year totalled €447.37 bn, up 33.5% from the same period in 2009.
The number of trades in May was 4.37 million, up 76.5% on the year and a monthly record high for the Spanish stock exchange. The number of trades to the end of May totalled 17.16 million, up 37.2% from that posted in the same period in 2009.
The trading volume posted by the ETF segment in May was up 630% on the same month of 2009, at €1.250 bn. The trading volume to the end of May was €3.64bn, up 253% from the same period a year earlier.
The number of trades on the ETF segment in May came in at 9,247, up 147% from the same month in 2009 and a monthly record high for this segment. In the first five months of the year the number of trades totalled 33,581, up by 85% year on year.
Futures and Options
In May, the BME’s Derivatives Market posted several record highs in trading. The monthly trading in IBEX 35 Futures reached an all-time high of 817,318 contracts, up
91% on the year. Trading in Mini Futures on the IBEX 35 reached another record high, at 551,557 contracts, up 87.5% from a year earlier.
These record highs have been accompanied by two daily record highs in the trading of Mini Futures on the IBEX 35, which took place on May 7, with 41,845 contracts traded and on May 10, with 40,357 contracts traded.
As regards the overall market, the notional trading volume came in at €102.72 billion, up 51% from the same month a year earlier. The notional trading volume so far this year stands at €436.22 billion, up 33% from a year earlier. In terms of contracts, the trading volume in May totaled 5,465,779 contracts, down 15.8% on the year.
In May, the number of trades came in at 778,156, up 72% from the same month a year earlier while the figure for the first five months totaled 2,744,896, up 23.3% from 2009.
Warrants and Certificates
The volume of warrants admitted to trading between January and May was 2,991.
Trading volume in May on the warrants and certificates market came in at €232 million, up 46% from the previous year. The number of trades was 51,097, up 69% from the same period a year earlier.
Corporate Debt
Corporate Debt trading in May grew by 27.8% year on year and came in at €261.03 bn, which is the highest trading volume so far this year.
New issues in May came in at €12.14 bn, down 65.7% year on year, in line with the situation of practical inactivity that affects all international corporate bond markets.
In May trading on the Public Debt electronic trading platform reached €21.21 bn, up 86% year on year.
