The Spanish Exchange Traded 6.7 Bn Shares In August, Up 14.4% From A Year Earlier - The Trading Volume In August Reached €55.58 Bn

Equities

In August the Spanish market traded 6.7 billion shares, which represents a 14.4% increase from the same month in 2008. The number of shares traded to the end of August totalled 74.30 billion, up 2.2% from the same period in 2008.

The number of trades came in at 2.29 million, up 8.2% from the same month in 2008. The number of trades to the end of August totalled 20.18 million, down 15.4% from the same period a year earlier.

The equity trading volume in August came in at €55.58, down 17.5% from the same month a year earlier.The trading volume to the end of August totalled €572.38 billion, down 35.5% from the same period a year earlier.

The number of trades on the ETF segment to the end of August totalled 31,703, up 118% from the same month a year earlier. In August the number of trades was up 373% from the same period in 2008, at 4,733. The trading volume on this segment in August came in at €204.5 million and in the first eight months of the year it totalled €2.10 billion.

Futures and Options

In August trading on MEFF, BME’s Derivatives Market, came in at 5.5 million contracts, up 32% from the same month a year earlier.

Highlights include Options on Stocks, with 2.1 million contracts traded, up 220% from the same period a year earlier, Stock Futures, at 2.5 million contracts, up 31% from August 2008 and Mini IBEX Futures, with 275,292 contracts traded, up 35% from the same period in 2008.

The trading volume on this market to the end of August totalled 66.2 million contracts, up 25.2% from the same period in 2008. Highlights include Options on Stocks, at 20.4 million contracts, up 102% from a year earlier, this figure exceeding the total trading in this product last year, at 18.3 million contracts. Other highlights include Stock Futures, at 37 million contracts, up 22% from the same period a year earlier.

Warrants and Certificates

The number of warrants issued to the end of August totalled 4,822.

Trading volume in August on the warrants and certificates market came in at €116.2 million, down 27.7% from the same month a year earlier. The number of trades was 22,550, down 29.8% from the same period a year ago.

The trading volume to the end of August totalled €1.27 billion, down 36.7% from the same period in 2008. The number of trades was down 35.1% from the same period a year earlier, at 247,925.

Corporate Debt

Corporate Debt trading on BME’s Corporate Debt Market, AIAF, to the end of August totalled €227.47 billion, up 30.9% from the same period a year earlier. The trading volume to the end of August reached €2.6 trillion, up 99.2% from the same period a year earlier. The number of trades in August was 56,876, down 21.8% on the same month last year and the number of trades in the first eight months of the year totalled 607,106, up 23% from the same month in 2008.

New issues in August came in at €16 bn, down 28.8% from the same period in 2008. New issues to the end of August totalled €300.48 bn, down 9.3% from August 2008. The outstanding balance of Corporate Debt at the end of August was €890.52 bn, up 7.7% from the same period a year earlier.
