The Spanish Exchange Posts Its Best Trading Figures Since Last October - Trading Volume Reached €75.78 Bn In May - Up 16% From The Average Posted In The Last Six Months

Equities

In May the trading volume on the Spanish exchange through SIBE amounted to €75.78 bn, which represents a 16% increase from the average posted in the last six months. It is also the best figure recorded since October 2008. The trading volume to the end of May totalled €335.13 bn.

The number of shares traded in May was 9.38 bn, up 23% from the same period in 2008. The number of shares traded to the end of May was 45.51 bn, down 3.8% on the previous year.

During this month the number of equity trades came in at 2.48 million, up 1.1% from the same month a year earlier. The number of trades to the end of May totalled 12.5 million, down 19% from the same month in 2008.

The number of trades on the ETF segment in May was 3,735, up 125% from the same month a year earlier. In the first five months of the year the number of trades was 18,113, up 82% from the same period in 2008. The trading volume on this segment in May came in at €171 million and in the five months of the year it totalled €1.03 billion.

Futures and Options

In May trading on MEFF, BME’s Derivatives Market, came in at 6.5 million contracts, up 28% from the same month a year earlier.

Highlights include Options on Stocks, with 1.7 million contracts traded, up 129%, Mini IBEX Futures, at 294,055 contracts, up 41% and Futures on stocks, at 3.7 million contracts, up 19%, all percentages compared with the same month a year earlier.

The trading volume on this market to the end of May totaled 36.6 million contracts, up 24% from the same period in 2008. Highlights include Options on Stocks, up 100% from a year earlier, at 12.1 million contracts, and Futures on Stocks, up 20% from a year earlier, at 19.1 million contracts.

Warrants and Certificates

The number of warrants issued to the end of May totalled 2,973, of which 14 issues, in this case of turbo-warrants, were made in May by BNP Paribas.

Trading volumes in May on the warrants and certificates market came in at €159.1 million, down 10.3% from April. The number of trades was 30,182, down 16.2% from the previous month.

Corporate Debt

Corporate Debt trading on the Spanish Debt Market to the end of May totalled €366.97 billion, up 73.4% from the same month a year earlier. The trading volume until the end of May came in at €1.7 trillion, up 142% from the same period a year earlier.

New issues in May came in at €35.39 billion, down 7.5% on the same month a year earlier. The volume of new issues in the first five months of the year totalled €368.34 bn, down 6.1% from the same period in 2008.

The outstanding balance of Corporate Debt at the end of May was €851.85 bn, up 8.8% from the same period a year earlier.
