The number of securities accounts operated by KDPW participants grew by almost 350 thousand in 2010. At 2010 year-end, they operated 1,477,419 accounts, up by 30 percent year on year. New stock investors were attracted in record-high numbers by State Treasury offerings as well as numerous IPOs on the WSE. The number of securities accounts operated by some brokers increased by several hundred percent.
The year 2010 was very special to the Polish IPO market. “Several large companies were privatised on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Such projects are always very attractive to investors. However, investor interest was the strongest in many years on the Polish market. Even the IPOs of PKO BP and PGNiG did not attract as many capital market investors as the IPOs of the Warsaw Stock Exchange and PZU in 2010,” said KDPW CEO Iwona Sroka about these figures.
Big IPOs Attract Many New Investors
The highest number of 140 thousand new securities accounts were opened in April. The high increase in the number of accounts resulted from the largest IPO in the history of the Polish capital market: the IPO of PZU worth over PLN 8 billion. “The PZU IPO occasioned a new record in our depository-settlement system kdpw_stream, which registered over 358 thousand cash market operations on 7 May 2010, most of them related to the settlement of transactions in PZU shares,” said Iwona Sroka.
Another sharp increase in the number of securities accounts by another 100 thousand took place in October in relation to the WSE IPO. More than 80 thousand accounts were opened in connection with the IPO of Tauron. “The three largest offerings of the State Treasury in 2010: PZU, Tauron and the Warsaw Stock Exchange, added more than 300 thousand securities accounts. Such IPOs strengthen the international position of the Polish capital market and put into practice the concept of citizen shareholding,” commented KDPW CEO Iwona Sroka.
