The Performance Of The MICEX Markets (11-15 August 2003)

The stock market. Tangible increase in prices took place in the stock market, as a result of which the MICEX Index grew by 7,1% and reached 464,33 points. Market participants were quite active and the volume of secondary trades reached 47,11 billion rubles, having increased about 1,9 times over the previous week. The blue chips went up by 5-10% on average, while the common stock of Surgutneftegaz went up by 16,6%.

The market of corporate, subfederal (regional) and municipal bonds. In the sector of corporate and regional bonds, the last week was marked by the smooth fluctuation of prices of most liquid issues. The average size of the deviation of the rate of return on medium-range (redemption with 2-4 years) liquid instruments did not exceed 0,3-0,8 points, the absolute values of the yield varying within the range of 11-14% of yearly interest. The volume of secondary trades in corporate and regional bonds reached 3,63 billion rubles, having decreased by about 23% over the previous week.

The government securities market. The government securities market was marked by the continuing fluctuation of prices against the background of low turnovers. The volume of trades in the secondary market fell by 12% over the previous week and reached 2,3 billion rubles, which is half as much as the average weekly level of this year. As a result of the week, the average weighted yield on GKO decreased by 2,2 points and reached 3,4% of yearly interest. The yield on OFZ changed within the range of -0,13 points to +0,06 points and stabilized at 1,93%-8,42% of yearly interest. The yield on such liquid issues as OFZ-AD 45001 grew by 0,01 points to 7,96% of yearly interest, while the yield on OFZ-FD 27023 decreased by 0,1 points to 7,7% of yearly interest.

The currency market. The currency market was marked by the average activity of participants. The exchange rate of the US dollar changed within the range of 30,32-30,38 rubles/1 dollar. On Friday, 15 August, the exchange rate of the dollar to the ruble, fixed by the Bank of Russia, reached 30,3532 rubles/1 dollar, while the exchange rate of the euro reached 34,1534 rubles/1 euro. The market turnover reached 1,8 billion dollars.
