Thailand’s Prime Minister Reassures Global Investors In “Thailand Focus 2004” Today

Date 20/09/2004

Thailand’s Prime Minister Pol. Lt. Col. Thaksin Shinawatra graciously opened “Thailand Focus 2004” -- which is accommodating 350 local and overseas fund managers, the highest number ever in one place -- to show the potential of Thailand’s economic and business strengths. These representatives of institutional investors have a phenomenal THB53 trillion under their management, or approximately 13 times the total Thai market capitalization.

“Thailand Focus 2004” is co-hosted by the Federation of Thai Capital Market Organizations (FeTCO), The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), Credit Suisse First Boston, and ABN AMRO. This special event is taking place over September 20 – 23, at the Four Seasons Hotel, Bangkok. “Thailand Focus” has been organized to provide an opportunity for institutional investors to gain direct access to the Thai government’s economic policies as well as essential corporate information first-hand from the principal sources. Today (Sept.20) after the opening, the Prime Minister gave his opening remarks, which were followed by a discussion forum on the country’s investment opportunities and growth potential by top executives of the large-scale multinational corporations Toyota Motors Corporation, Exxon-Mobil, Minebea, and Samsung Asia. Top-echelon representatives of these corporate giants are participating in “Thailand Focus” to present their corporations’ views and information personally.

The discussion forum was followed by the Finance Minister, Dr. Somkid Jatusripitak, who presented a keynote address which reaffirmed the stability of the Thai financial system. The Finance Minister’s address preceded a discussion by M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula, the Bank of Thailand’s Governor: Dr. Olarn Chaipravat, Advisor to the Finance Minister, and Mr. Stewart Peterson, Regional Strategist of CSFB, on “Fiscal Sustainability & Financial System”.

There will be a forum held this evening focusing on the strengths of the private sector. The audience will be joined by Dr. Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, Mr. Anant Asavabhokin, and Mr. Chartsiri Sophonpanich, who will inform and reassure investors about Thailand’s existing investment conditions, as well as the conditions found in the nation’s finance, and property development sectors.

“Thailand Focus 2004” is being held September 20 – 23, at the Four Seasons Hotel. The Ministers of Transportation, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will also kindheartedly give their insights in the coming days, to better clarify Thailand’s policies to the investors. On September 23, the participants will have an opportunity to visit large-scale projects on-site, i.e., the New Bangkok International Airport (NBIA) or the Suvarnabhumi Airport, and the Amata Nakorn Industrial Estate. It is thus believed that the event will be the year’s most important collaboration of all relevant parties to help strengthen investor confidence in Thailand’s economic fundamentals and investment conditions.
