Date 18/10/2011

  • Oil futures trading reaches 164 contracts on first day
  • TFEX’s daily trading volume more than doubled in first nine months
  • Margin rates of silver futures to be raised, stocks futures to be adjusted

The Thailand Futures Exchange plc (TFEX), under The Stock Exchange of Thailand group, reveals that the first trading day of oil futures reached 164 contracts on its October 17 launch. For the first nine months of this year, average daily trading volume of total derivatives jumped 124 percent to 41,828 contracts, due mainly to the launch of a night session and volatility of gold and equities markets.

In the first trading day, the total trading number of oil futures contracts was comprised of 163 contracts of BRX11, maturing in November and one contract of BRZ11, maturing in December. In addition, 19 contracts were traded in the night session, said TFEX Managing Director Kesara Manchusree.

“Investors might take time to experience and develop familiarity with oil futures, like they do with other derivatives. We expect to have market makers for oil futures in late November,” said Kesara.

In the first nine months of 2011, TFEX’s average daily trading volume reached 41,828 contracts, up 124 percent from 18,676 contracts traded in 2010, mainly boosted by volumes of SET50 index futures and gold futures, which were 16,438 and 17,470 contracts, respectively.

TFEX also announces the adjustment of margin rates on some futures products, effective from October 25, to cope with market volatility. The new margin rate for retail clients for silver futures will be THB 22,800 per contract, from THB 19,950. In addition, margin rates of stock futures for 19 underlying stocks will be raised, while those of two underlying stocks will be cut. The rest of other futures products remain unchanged. For Oil futures, its margin rates for retail clients are THB 26,600 per contract.
