Thai Bourse Holds Mutual Fund Fair On July 5-8

Date 04/07/2012

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) will hold “Mutual Fund Fair @ Central World” on July 5-8 under the campaign “Move Savings to Mutual Funds” to encourage investors to diversify their portfolios and boost returns via mutual funds.

The event, co-hosted by Association of Investment Management Companies (AIMC) and 18 asset management firms, offers intensive seminars throughout four days at Central World, Bangkok.

“Mutual funds have been growing continuously and have offered many types to investors in order to build their returns on top of savings. This is proved by the high number of mutual fund accounts, reaching a total of 2.9 million in 2011, up by 457,398 accounts or 18.57 percent from a year earlier. This year’s campaign ‘Move Savings to Mutual Funds’ is created to cope with the imposition of the Deposit Protection Agency Act last year, which impacted savings to some extent by reducing deposit protection. The fair will help savers see funds as attractive investment alternatives to diversify their portfolios for better returns. There are several types of mutual funds offered in the market, including fixed income, equity, exchange-traded, and tax-incentive funds like retirement mutual and long-term funds,” said SET Chief Marketing Officer Pakorn Peetathawatchai.

AIMC Chairman Somjin Sornpaisarn said: “Since the start of this year, the mutual funds industry has grown about 12.30 percent from the end of last year. However, the growth is largely from fixed-income funds, both in the domestic and international markets, reflecting the emphasis in low-risk assets and lack of diversification into other assets, such as stocks, gold, real estate, balanced funds, and tax-incentive funds. Because diversification is a core concept of investment, asset management firms will offer methods and techniques for investment in assets to investors in the fair, enabling them to invest via mutual funds in order to meet the real objectives for investment.”

This fair will also feature 14 seminars to provide investment knowledge and portfolio management techniques. There are about 1,100 funds offered in this event. Participants can also get information and advice from asset management companies, such as on evaluation of fund performance and portfolio management
