Thai Bourse Develops Next Generation Securities Analysts Via The ‘Young Research Competition’ Program

Date 16/01/2006

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), the Market for Alternative Investment (mai), SETTRADE.Com Co. Ltd. and the Securities Analysts Association (SAA) co-hosted a research competition to develop quality analysts of the future, granting prizes and scholarships worth over THB5 million.

SET President Mr. Kittiratt Na-Ranong said that in 2005, there were 725 registered securities analysts with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and 111,550 active trading accounts (as of Nov. 30, 2006). The development of additional quality analysts will benefit market investors.

The SET’s Thailand Securities Institute (TSI), in conjunction with the mai, SETTRADE.Com and the SAA, hosted the Young Researcher Competition (YRC) program to enable students from all over Thailand, regardless of their fields of study, to receive training and present their research reports.

“The YRC project is to produce quality securities analysts for the Thai capital market. The project provided an environment for the contestants to present their research reports to the judges, who are prominent persons or experts in the capital market. It is the first time that this kind of project has been held. We hope the participants will benefit and utilize what they gained for themselves as well as for the overall capital market,” the SET President said.

The winner and the 1st two runners-up of the SET Young Researcher Award were all from Thammasat University’s Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy.

Mr. Pawarit Pooriwatekunakorn, a senior student, took top honors with his research report on the Major Cineplex Group Pcl. (MAJOR). Ms. Sireethorn Sujitranuwat, a junior student, analyzing Asian Property Pcl. (AP), was the 1st runner-up. And, Ms. Pornchanok Ratanarujikorn, a senior student, analyzing ITV Pcl. (ITV) was 2nd runner-up

The outstanding researcher of a mai stock, Ms. Patchanok Pooworawong, who was also a senior student from Thammasat University, won the ‘mai Star Researcher’ award.

There were 7 additional students awarded Top Ten Young Researcher awards. They produced outstanding research on SET-listed stocks. Four more students were presented with Top Five-Star Researcher awards, for conducting outstanding research on mai-listed stocks. For more details on all award recipients, please see www.tsi-thailand.org.

The YRC Program started on July 9, 2005. In the first round of the selection, 509 students qualified out of a total of 1,307 applicants; 217 students qualified for the second round. In addition to training tips on how to conduct executive interviews and research writing, these students also had a chance to attend a seminar on “The Analysts’ Career”, visit leading listed companies and interview executives. The 3rd round hosted the 50 most-qualified participants. These semi-finalists will be trained and sit for CISA Level 1 exam in 2006. They will also have a chance to work with or become trainees for leading securities/investment management companies. The YRC Program is thus a great opportunity for them to gain valuable direct experience and develop their own talents.
