Thai Bourse Continues Teacher Education Program In 2012

Date 12/03/2012

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), together with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), jointly holds a social activity to enhance basic knowledge in personal finance and investment for youth, called “Ngern Thong Khong Mee Kha” or “Personal Finance for Youth,”  by holding training session for teachers of BMA schools.

This year’s project continues to focus on developing basic financial management courses for teachers by producing instruction media, such as e-Teaching Books, ready-made teaching plans, and e-Training via video; the media should be completed in May.

“The program will cultivate a savings culture and systematically build financial discipline in youth. So far, the program has been a huge success: In 2011, there were 1,316 teachers from 436 schools taking the courses and they taught more than 340,000 primary and high school students. We are committed to building opportunities for youth to grow through basic personal finance, enabling them to plan and decide their finance efficiently, because youth is the core foundation of the country’s development,” said SET President Charamporn Jotikasthira.

Mrs. Taya Teepsuwan , Deputy Governor of Bangkok, said: “BMA gives complete collaboration and support to the ’Ngern Thong Khong Mee Kha’ program of SET. So far, Bangkok’s education department has brought this program’s course content into classes and encouraged administrators and teachers by holding savings activities in the schools following the course, including a painting contest. We will continue to consistently support this training program.”

SET will also join with BMA to encourage students to join in an annual contest “The Diamond in Economics: Ngern Thong Khong Mee Kha” which is a financial literacy contest to help establish prudent financial habits among youth.

The “Ngern Thong Khong Mee Kha” program has been conducted since 2002 through distributing books, conducting savings activities and financial contests, and other activities. Since its inception, the program has educated more than 7.14 million students nationwide, trained 35,000 teachers, and had more than 23,000 schools join the program.
