The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), together with Morningstar Research (Thailand) Ltd. and Association of Investment Management Companies (AIMC), today organized the “SET & Morningstar Fund Awards Thailand” event to develop and enhance Thailand’s fund industry. Two “SET Excellence Awards” were granted to an Exchange-traded Fund house and a Property Fund & Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) house, together with seven “Morningstar Fund Awards”.
This year the new “Morningstar Fund House Awards” have been introduced to recognize two fund firms prominent in domestic investment: Thanachart Fund Management Co., Ltd. (TNS) for domestic equity and BBL Asset Management Co., Ltd. (BLS) for domestic fixed-income.
SET Executive Vice President Santi Kiranand said SET supported this event to recognize fund firms with outstanding fund management performance to honor them as role models for the fund industry on excellent performance at international standard, while supporting investors’ decision making. Investment in mutual funds has drastically helped boost Thai capital market growth. SET has always supported the fund industry in many aspects, including investment opportunity expansion, educational knowhow, and jointly developed investment products such covering equity mutual funds, property funds, infrastructure funds and exchange-traded funds. On top of that, SET has supported the offering of more sophisticated investment choices and enhancing Thailand’s capital market with matching products available overseas. For this year, the SET Excellence Awards for Exchange-traded Fund House and Property Fund & Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) House have been granted for the second consecutive year. Currently, ETFs’ net asset under management was THB 5.54 billion (USD 167.94 million), while market capitalization of property funds and REITs was worth a combined THB 320.68 billion (USD 9.72 billion).
Anthony Serhan, Morningstar’s Chief Financial Advisor and Managing Director of Research Strategy for Asia-Pacific, stated that Morningstar has co-hosted the “SET & Morningstar Fund Awards Thailand” for six consecutive years. This year, we initiated, for the first time in Thailand, two “Morningstar Fund House Awards” for fund firms prominent in particular areas: domestic equity investment and domestic fixed income investment, while seven awards were granted for seven funds that have achieved excellence level. Rigorous selection criteria were used, covering risks and returns, and long-term investment strategy, the same measures used last year for this project and other Morningstar projects globally.
Vorawan Tarapoom, AIMC Chairwoman, stated that the awards were considered great honors for fund firms as they truly deserved from their dedication to manage funds efficiently. This reflected the fact that Thailand’s fund firms could contribute to quality long-term investment. Success measured by long-term period was similar to a marathon running, not a sprint. Apart from superior performance, AIMC expected the fund industry to provide transparency, enhancing savings and investment knowledge, promoting investment plan for retirement, pushing for the government’s pension fund, as well as financial literacy education.
