Date 04/11/2019

Taylor’s University’s Taylor’s Debaters emerged champion of Bursa Malaysia Berhad’s (“Bursa Malaysia” or “the Exchange”) National Investment Debate Challenge 2019 at the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) in Bukit Jalil on Saturday, 2 November 2019, after defeating International Islamic University Malaysia’s IIUM 2 in an exciting final round where they contended for the motion “Market sentiment affects share prices more than business performance”.

Claiming the top prize of RM9,000, Taylor’s Debaters’s Aiman Zuhaily Bin Iwan Azlan, Deepan Ramanesh Kumar and Mahherrajan Narayanan walked away with RM3,000 each, to be deposited to their respective trading accounts with CGS-CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd. Meanwhile, first runner-up IIUM 2 received RM6,000 in prize money. The trophy for Best Speaker Award went to Arsyad Asyl Bin Romil of International Islamic University Malaysia, who won over the judges and the audience with his substantive arguments, articulations and poise.

The National Investment Debate Challenge 2019 saw 16 teams from 12 universities from all over Malaysia battling it out through several rounds, covering a wide spectrum of interesting topics related to investment and the capital market. APU, International Islamic University Malaysia, Inti International College Penang, and Taylor’s University were the four institutions that made it to the semi-finals on Saturday.

Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, Chief Executive Officer of Bursa Malaysia said, “We designed the debate topics to be high-level and challenging, with the aim of giving the students the impetus to understand the many facets of investing and recognise how the right knowledge can help them grow wealth in the capital market responsibly. I am greatly encouraged by the level of knowledge and overall performance of the debating teams, which shows that the competition has successfully met its objective.”

The National Investment Debate Challenge is one of the Exchange’s financial literacy initiatives targeted at future investors. The competition is designed to stimulate interest, discussion and research amongst tertiary students, in order to equip them with knowledge on the capital market and to nurture a solid base of investors in the next generation.

Offering a total prize money of RM21,000, this second edition of the National Investment Debate Challenge was sponsored and supported by CGS-CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd, Affin Hwang Capital, Maybank Investment Bank Bhd and Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd.

Puan Ruzi Ajith, Chief Executive Officer, CGS-CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd said, “We believe in developing our young Malaysians with critical thinking knowledge and sound thought processes that will serve their future well. Taking the stand and delivering with proud confidence, they will be the bright young minds of many successful communities.”

“We are excited to be part of the National Investment Debate Challenge which has undoubtedly raised the participants’ investment knowledge,” said Datuk Maimoonah Hussain, Group Managing Director of Affin Hwang Capital. “We have always been supportive of Bursa Malaysia’s initiatives to raise the financial literacy of Malaysian youths, and will continue supporting efforts to forge a community of future investors in Malaysia,” she added.

To engage the next generation of investors, the Exchange also champions the Bursa Young Investor Club (BYIC), an initiative in collaboration with tertiary education institutions nationwide to create a platform for students to increase their investment awareness and knowledge through personal development programmes. Programmes under the BYIC include leadership bootcamps, investment workshops, webinar series and the BYIC challenge game – a stock simulation game to pique students’ interest in stock market investing. To date, a total of 26 BYICs have been established across the nation.
