Taiwan Stock Exchange Leads Delegation To Singapore To Foster The Establishment Of An International Trading Platform

Date 17/04/2014

Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) Chairman, Mr. Lee Sush-der, led a delegation to Singapore from 16 to 18 April to meet with Mr. Magnus Böcker, Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Exchange (SGX). During the talks, the two parties discussed areas for potential cooperation, including measures to further internationalize the Taiwan and Singapore capital markets and develop a trading platform for Southeast Asia.

In recent years, TWSE has been actively engaging and forming alliances with foreign exchanges to attract foreign capital to the Taiwan equity market and enhance investor confidence. During his meeting with Mr. Böcker, Chairman Lee discussed possible ways to establish cross-border trading connectivity between Singapore and Taiwan. The meeting reached a high degree of consensus, with both parties agreeing to adopt a flexible approach to connectivity. SGX and TWSE have formed a working group to discuss the specific mechanisms, such as trading, clearing and settlement systems, computer systems and marketing. The cooperation between the two exchanges will further internationalize Taiwan’s capital market and also enable synergy.

While in Singapore, TWSE hosted the “Invest Taiwan” luncheon and “Taiwan Listing Seminar” to promote the Taiwan capital market and the benefits of listing in Taiwan to Southeast Asian institutional investors and enterprises respectively.  Both events promoted investment opportunities currently available in the Taiwan capital market, while increasing foreign investors’ understanding of and willingness to invest in Taiwan equities. TWSE also encouraged Southeast Asian companies, especially those with roots in Taiwan, to consider a listing in Taiwan.

TWSE also invited major Singaporean companies and institutional investors to join the “Invest Taiwan” luncheon and a “Taiwan Listing Seminar” in Singapore. Participants at the “Invest Taiwan” luncheon included sovereign wealth funds, asset managers, brokerages and insurance companies. At the event, TWSE outlined recent reforms introduced in the Taiwan equity markets and its strategy for developing new financial products. It also explained how the liberalization of the Taiwan market is linking it with overseas markets. The event provided an opportunity for the exchange of ideas and opinions on investment opportunities available in Taiwan, as well as for investors to increase their understanding of the Taiwan market and Taiwan domestic companies. Investors attending these meetings showed an active interest in the Taiwan market, as they actively exchanged views with TWSE delegates.

TWSE also promoted Taiwan listings during the trip. There are currently over one hundred quality Taiwanese companies based in Southeast Asia, many of which are electronics companies. Some have already listed on the Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore markets. TWSE offers an attractive platform for companies seeking capital to fuel their growth, offering higher P/E and turnover than neighboring markets and reasonable listing costs.

Mr. Lee said, “As capital markets become more globalized, we will focus on building cross-border trading platforms that will make it easier for local companies to attract foreign investors, while also promoting Taiwan’s capital market on the global stage.”
