Sydney Futures Exchange: Record Electricity Volumes

Date 03/05/2006

A record 1,944,645MWhs of electricity were traded in the d-cypha SFE electricity futures and options contracts yesterday, exceeding the previous record of 1,401,600 MWhs set in April 2005.

Year to date, the d-cypha SFE contracts have averaged 174 contracts a day, representing an average 39% of underlying system demand in the National Electricity Market (NSW, VIC, SA and QLD), up 222% on the comparable period in 2005.

Since their inception in September 2002, almost half (49.7%) of the $9.2 billion in notional value of trading in the d-cypha SFE electricity products (namely, swaps, options and caps) has occurred in the over-the-counter (OTC) market and in turn has been registered for clearing at SFE Clearing Corporation.

“The d-cypha SFE market provides users with the ability to trade electricity derivatives on exchange, as well as providing services to the over-the-counter (OTC) market.” said Mr Peter Hiom, Executive General Manager of Business Development. “By allowing registration of trades negotiated OTC, SFE provides customers with the full netting, compliance and credit risk mitigation benefits available for futures contracts executed on exchange through SFE’s trading platform, SYCOM”.
