STOXX: Trumps’ Protectionist Policies Thwart Markets

Date 08/02/2017

Investors’ hopes for a fiscal boost to the world’s largest economy have been tempered by controversial policies of Donald Trump. Supported by signs of accelerating momentum in the global economy and lingering hopes of a large fiscal stimulus, the global stock market has been in positive territory until the very end of the month. But the mood has soured when Trump fired the federal government’s top lawyer after she took the extraordinarily rare step of defying the White House over the travel ban.

Basic resources stocks showed by far the best performance of all industry sectors in January, but also over the period of one year. The sector is very dependent on the general economic development and could profit from developments since the election of Donald Trump. In addition, those stocks have been supported by new data showing an expansion in Chinese industrial production.

Given Donald Trump’s pledges for deregulation, it could evolve a new era for shareholder activism. The STOXX Activist Indices capture the performance of US public companies in which the top activist hedge funds have a significant investment stake.
