The presidential election in the US lead to more uncertainty in October and affected especially industry sectors that are depending on future decisions on laws and regulations under the new presidency – for example the health care sector. Southern Europe has also been affected by political events. For example, the formation of a new government in Spain and the robust economic growth supported the country’s equity market. Together with Greece and Italy, Spain has been the top performer.
After months with high volatility, the banks sector surprised again with performance gains of 6.71% as third quarter earnings results improved substantially. The sector illustrates perfectly the current market environment, where low interest rates and uncertainty seem to be the most frequently discussed issues in the investment community. Investors are seeking for solutions that deliver robust income while decreasing volatility. The STOXX Select index family is based on a balanced approach focusing on both dimensions.
