STOXX Ltd. Celebrates 15th Anniversary Of European Exchange-Traded Funds

Date 10/04/2015

STOXX Limited, a leading provider of innovative, tradable and global index concepts, celebrates the 15th anniversary of European exchange traded-funds (ETFs). The two first ETFs launched in Europe were based on the EURO STOXX 50 and STOXX Europe 50 indices and were listed on Deutsche Börse’s Xetra platform on Apr. 11, 2000.

“Europe is looking back at 15 successful years of ETF growth. Today, we would like to congratulate European ETF issuers on this achievement,” said Hartmut Graf, chief executive officer, STOXX Limited. “We strongly believe that STOXX has played an important role in this development. The first ETFs in Europe were based on our flagship indices, and ever since then, we have developed innovative, rules-based and transparent index concepts - which are the basis for successful ETFs.”

STOXX indices have become a standard underlying for index-based investments such as ETFs, futures & options and structured products, as well as passively managed investment funds. Since June 2010, STOXX also is the marketing agent for the indices of Deutsche Börse AG and SIX, amongst them the DAX and the SMI indices.

Globally, 274 ETFs were based on STOXX, DAX and SMI indices at the end of 2014, amongst them the top four ETFs by assets under management (AUM) which provide exposure to European markets. Twenty percent of all AUM invested in ETFs listed in Europe are based on STOXX indices. For derivatives, the EURO STOXX 50 is the most frequently used underlying in Europe and number three globally, as measured by notional value. In the structured products market, STOXX is the leading index provider globally, with DAX and EURO STOXX 50 being the two most widely used indices for structured products.
