Meanwhile, the daily trading value of THB20,000 mln. in 2004 represented a rise of 8.66% over 2003’s THB18,908.02 mln. The market P/E (price-earnings ratio) was about 9.34 times.
As for trading by customer group, local institutions and foreign investors had net buy values of THB3,972.99 mln. (approx. USD99.3 mln.) and THB4,189.83 mln. (approx. USD104.75 mln.) respectively. The SET Index closed on December 29, 2004, at 664.46 points, a decrease of 107.69 points, or 14%, from year-end 2003, which closed at 772.15 points. The Index reached its trough at 581.61 points on May 17, 2004, and its peak at 794.01 points on January 12, 2004. The total market capitalization was recorded at THB4,497,101.96 mln., down by 6.11% compared to the end of 2003 at THB4,789,857.03 mln.
“Although the total trading turnover increased over the past year, the SET Index declined by 14% due to internal and external factors, especially crude oil prices in overseas markets, exchange rate fluctuations, and an upward trend in interest rates. In addition, internal factors, such as the bird flu epidemic and the unrest in Thailand’s 3 southern provinces, also had negative impacts on investment. Most recently, there was the catastrophe which occurred in 6 southern provinces at the very end of this year. This tsunami, however, had little effect on the market. Nevertheless, if we assess the market condition over the past 2 years, from 2002 - 2004, the SET Index actually increased by an exceptional rate of 85%.
“The operational performance of listed companies during the first 9 months of 2004 has shown that the SET listed companies have fairly good fundamentals. The companies posted a total of THB325,405.17 mln., increasing by 44% from THB226,465.85 mln. in 2003,” Mr. Kittiratt said.
In 2004, there were a total of 36 new listings on the SET. This brings the total to 439 listed companies on the SET. For the Market for Alternative Investments (“mai”), there were 14 new listings this year, bringing the total number of listed companies to 24. Concerning the most actively traded securities in 2004, the top five securities were 1) PTT Pcl. 2) Bangkok Bank Pcl. 3) Siam City Bank Pcl.- derivative warrants 4) Krung Thai Bank Pcl., and 5) Italian-Thai Development Pcl.
