Executive Vice President of The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Ms. Sopawadee Lertmanaschai, revealed that from January 4, 2005 onwards the SET will adjust its sector classifications so as to enlarge the scope of some sectors and make the classification system more flexible for dealing with new listings on the Exchange. Moreover, the adjustments to the SET’s sector classifications will permit them to better reflect the Thailand’s most important industries. The industries positioned to become Thailand’s most competitive arenas such as fashion, automotive, and transportation & logistics will thus be added.
“The adjustments include renaming and re-defining 7 existing sectors. And, the ‘Jewelry & Ornaments’ and ’Warehouse & Silo’ sectors will no longer exist in 2005,” Ms. Sopawadee said.
The 7 sectors to be renamed and re-defined are:
CURRENT NAMES | NEW NAMES |
Building & Furnishing Materials | Construction Materials |
Chemicals & Plastics | Petrochemicals & Chemicals |
Pharmaceuticals Products & Cosmetics | Personal Products & Pharmaceuticals |
Pulp & Paper | Paper & Printing Materials |
Vehicles & Parts | Automotive |
Textiles, Clothing & Footwear | Fashion |
Transportation | Transportation & Logistics |
Ms. Sopawadee also added that: “As the Jewelry & Ornaments Sector will be abolished, its 2 listed companies--Pranda Jewelry Pcl. (PRANDA) and Sawang Exports Pcl. (SAWANG)—will be moved to the Fashion Sector (FASHION), as this sector’s definition includes jewelry and ornaments-- which are also fashion products.”
For the 5 listed companies in the Warehouse & Silo Sector namely Bangpakong Terminal Pcl. (BTC), Krungdhep Sophon Pcl. (KWC), Sub Sri Thai Warehouse Pcl. (SST), Thai Sugar Terminal Pcl. (TSTE), and United Standard Terminal Pcl. (TSTE), they will be moved to the Transportation & Logistics Sector as warehouses and terminals are now considered an integral part of the transportation business.
Also slated for a change in sector classification are Newcity (Bangkok) Pcl. (NC) and I.C.C. International Pcl. (ICC), both currently listed in the Commerce Sector. They will both be moved to the new Fashion Sector as well. This is because more than 50% of their major revenue is derived from the distribution of clothing products, which are considered fashion items.
In accordance with these adjustments, the sector names that appear in all forms of media will be re-shuffled alphabetically. Nevertheless, their sector indexes will still remain, utilizing their new names.
