Stock Exchange Of Thailand: Thailand Finance Minister, Capital Market-Related Organizations, And Business Sector Unite In A Grand Workshop June 11-13

The Finance Minister and over 120 top-level executives from capital market-related organizations will join together in the workshop entitled “Top Executives’ Networking Forum 2004: A Road to Borderless Cooperation”. Their purpose is to gain insights and exchange views beneficial to finalizing the next stage of the Thai capital market structural development plan. They will meet June 11 –13 at the Dusit Resort and Polo Club, Cha-am, in Petchaburi Province.

SET President Kittiratt Na-Ranong revealed that Finance Minister Dr. Somkid Jatusripitak would preside over this workshop. At this forum, about 120 top-level executives in the public and private sectors will share and exchange views on the structural development of the Thai capital market. This forum will also provide participants with an opportunity to build and strengthen their networks, as an effectively used network of senior executives can lead to a greater utilization of capital market mechanisms for driving their businesses.

“The Finance Minister, Dr. Somkid Jatusripitak, will give a special talk on ’Thailand’s Economic Policy’ and will also attend the forum to present capital market policy guidelines to senior executives of attending organizations. This will be the time that organizations in the Thai capital market will be able to make full use of top-level brainstorming and exchange views, leading to a more advancement in developing the Thai Capital Market Master Plan, which has been in use over the past two years,” Mr. Kittiratt said.

Dr. Uttama Savanayana, Advisor to the Minister of Finance, said that in addition to the insights presented at the Forum on the overview of the Thai economy in relation to the rest of the world, there will also be a discussion on the topic “The Thai Economy: Its Current Situation and Future Outlook”. Experts and executives of leading firms will conduct this useful program. Additionally, leading executives from the banking and property development industries will share their insights at a second in-depth discussion. Therefore, there will be a significant amount of useful information and direction to aid executives in their business operations.

Dr. Uttama also noted that: “Most significantly, the Finance Minister will join in the discussion with senior executives concerning their plans and proposals. Ultimately these proposals will be implemented to yield effective results for the development of the stock market, the economy, and the Thai society as a whole. On the capital market, an interesting topic will be “Capital Market: Ensuring the Public’s Trust”. Listed firms’ executives, each of who has extensive experience in establishing good corporate governance (CG) and social accountability, will delve into this vital topic. Also be representatives from market-related organizations will exchange views on how to upgrade the standards of CG-related work efforts.

The discussion on “Capital Market: The Road Forward” is another session that will provide insights on enhancing the competitiveness of the Thai capital market. This forum will also promote greater regional interconnections, as regional interaction becoming a significant issue recently as the ASEAN countries attempt to develop and promote their markets more widely.”

Mr. Kittiratt said that: “This workshop will really be worthwhile time spent on fruitful discussions about the Thai capital market. We believe the outcome of the discussions will soon materialize and will bring about the trust of related parties in our market.”p> The SET plans to hold similar types of workshops every quarter. Two workshops have been held, in November 2003 and March 2004, and were well attended by listed companies’ executives. These were very fruitful opportunities for them to exchange views and build up their business networks.

The coming workshop’s 120-plus participants should include the Chairmen and/or Chief Executive Officers of the Securities and Exchange Commission, the SET, the Listed Companies Association, the Association of Listed Companies’ President, the Securities Analysts’ Association, the Association of Investment Management Companies, the Institute of Certified Accountants and Auditors of Thailand, the Thai Bankers’ Association, the Government Pension Fund, as well as the executives of numerous leading listed companies, the SET member companies, and investment management companies.
