The President of the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), Mr. Kittiratt Na-Ranong, announced today (14 January 2002) that the SET has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government Pension Fund (GPF). This aims to help promote a better understanding of securities investing, and to distribute investment related news and information more widely throughout the country to government officials who are GPF members.

"This cooperation is in accordance with the Capital Market Master Plan, wherein the SET is responsible for the promotion of education to various target groups of potential investors and savers. GPF members, who amount to more than 1.2 million people countrywide, count as a significant group. The SET will provide the educational content, as well as investment news and updates, to be distributed to the members of the GPF through the various news media, such as radio stations, television programs, etc. Furthermore, the SET, in collaboration with the GPF, will offer educational programs, mobilize events under the GPF member-relations program, and provide financial support for the production and distribution of material through media channels. Moreover, the SET will act as the core coordinator with both public and private organizations in extending these educational programs to reach out to the general public as much as possible," the SET President said in outlining the initiative.

In welcoming this proposal on behalf of the Fund, the Secretary-General of the GPF, Mr. Visit Tantisunthorn, declared "This is an auspicious time for organizations in the Capital Market to join hands to promote understanding and knowledge to assist people to make wise investment decisions. The GPF will offer promotional channels for the various SET activities such as educational programs and public relations campaigns, to reach GPF members. In addition, the GPF will coordinate with the various organizations in charge of the distribution of information, such as the producers of television and radio programs, as well as other media, plus preparing and verifying the materials used.'

'The success of this collaboration will mark a new step in the development of the Thai capital market." The GPF Secretary-general concluded.
