Stock Exchange Of Thailand Collaborates With Thammasat University In Developing The 1st Corporate Governance Course Ever & Disseminating Investment Knowledge To Build Financial Discipline

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) teams up with Thammasat University to develop a groundbreaking curriculum on good corporate governance (CG). The two institutions will further collaborate on projects to educate students, university personnel, and the general public about finance and investment. The joint venture’s aim is to build financial discipline and an investment culture. They also aim to push for including Personal Finance as a subject in the student curriculum, and to support other activities that will lay down a firm foundation for the capital market.

The President of the SET, Mr. Kittiratt Na-Ranong, revealed the progress being made by the SET’s University Networking Project in disseminating knowledge in the areas of finance & investment, using a network of tertiary educational institutions to accomplish its mission. The SET is honored that Thammasat University, one of the country’s leading and long-established educational institutions, will join it in widely promote greater understanding about finance and investment to Thai youth, students, lecturers, and other university personnel, as well as the rest of Thai society.

“The collaboration with Thammasat University will be Thailand’s first curriculum development devoted specifically to good corporate governance. We expect to promote good corporate governance knowledge effectively and meaningfully.

“Additionally, there’ll be joint activities to distribute knowledge in the areas of finance and investment. We will also support additional curriculum development for undergraduate students to help promote better financial discipline amongst Thai youth. The new curriculum will be developed in line with the demands of the capital market industry. The two organizations will also strive for an accredited curriculum for students whose ambition it is to have a professional life in the capital market.” said Mr. Kittiratt.

Associate Professor Dr. Naris Chaiyasut, Thammasat University’s Rector, said, “Thammasat University is delighted to join with the SET to act as a knowledge dissemination center. Together we will spread knowledge that will create a greater understanding of the fields of finance and investment. Our information will be disseminated amongst Thailand’s youth, its students and its university personnel as well as throughout the general public.

“In regards to the first course to be developed on good CG, we are very honored to be involved in following the direction established by Prof. Sangvian Indaravijaya, who strongly encouraged the business community and listed companies to place a greater importance on good CG. Other collaborations will include activities, seminars, and the establishing of the SET’s library branch to serve as an information source for interested people.

Moreover, Thammasat University, Chulalongkorn University, and the SET will jointly organize a training program for undergraduate lecturers of finance throughout Thailand to enhance the lecturers’ knowledge and experience. The training course will be held annually, and in 2004, it is scheduled to be held on October 13-17,” Assoc. Prof. Naris said.

The SET has signed a memorandum of understanding under the University Networking Project with a total of 4 central and regional institutions, i.e., Chiang Mai University, Khon Kaen University, Chulalongkorn University, and most recently Thammasat University.
