Speaking after being officially appointed by the board, Mr. Chavalit expressed pleasure at the thought of tackling his new post. "I am pleased, and feel ready to take on the role of SET board chairman, as the development of the stock market is an important factor behind the strengthening of the Thai economic system. Once I have taken up my post I will work together with the SET board to push ahead with the various developments of the stock market for which plans have already been laid down, to ensure that they produce concrete results as quickly as possible. At the same time, I will consider whether or not to map out approaches for the development of other aspects of the stock market. I am confident that I will be able to work smoothly in cooperation with the members of the present SET board", he said.
Mr. Vicharat said that all the board members had felt that Mr. Chavalit was the right man for the job. "The SET board joined together in deliberating the selection of the new SET chairman. It was felt unanimously that Mr. Chavalit was the person most suitable in every respect, whether in terms of his knowledge, his capability, or his experience of more than 30 years in the financial and stock markets", Mr. Vicharat said. "At the same time, he is acknowledged by all sides as being someone who has had a continuously good record in office, as well as someone with broad vision. His appointment as the new SET chairman makes me confident that his knowledge, experience and expertise will lead to the development of the stock market and the widespread acceptance of the stock market by investors, member companies and listed companies".
Mr. Chavalit Thanachanan graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from Manchester University, UK, and worked as the governor of the Bank of Thailand from March to September 1990. At present he fills a number of important posts, and plays an important role in ensuring good governance. Mr. Chavalit is currently a chairman of the sub-committee on good governance, and also the chairman of the Thai Institute of Directors Association (IOD).
