Stock Exchange Of Hong Kong Monthly Market Statistics - October 2000

Turnover

The average daily turnover for the 20 trading days in October was HK$8,845 million, a decrease of 12 per cent compared with the previous month but an increase of 12 per cent as compared with the HK$7,868 million in October 1999. Total turnover value for the month was HK$176,897 million, compared with HK$201,877 million in the previous month and HK$149,497 million in October 1999. Of this total, HK$34.38 million was contributed by trading in NASDAQ stocks.

A total of 125,148 million shares changed hands in October, compared with 129,890 million shares in the previous month and 127,560 million shares in October 1999. Of this total, 99,690 shares were contributed by trading in NASDAQ stocks. The average daily turnover by volume was 6,257 million shares, down 4 per cent from the previous month and 7 per cent when compared with 6,714 million shares in October 1999.

The total number of trades during the month was 1,903,619 which was 5 per cent less than that in September. Of this total, the number of trades in NASDAQ stocks was 900.

Average daily turnover for the first ten months of the year was HK$13,054 million, compared with HK$6,916 million in the same period last year. Total turnover by value was HK$2,689,039 million during the first ten months of the year, compared with HK$1,410,892 million for the same period last year.

During the first ten months of this year, the average daily turnover by volume was 9,993 million shares, compared with 5,203 million shares during the corresponding period of 1999. A total of 2,058,479 million shares were traded during the first ten months of this year, compared with 1,061,450 million shares during the same period in 1999.

Index movement

The market moved in a downside trend most of the time in October and recovered somewhat in the later part of the month.

The All Ordinaries Index at the end of October was 6117.87, a decrease of 6 per cent from the previous month but an increase of 10 per cent from October 1999. Its highest closing for October was 6664.82 on the 5th and its lowest was 5908.78 on the 19th.

The Hang Seng Index at the end of October was 14895.34, a decrease of 5 per cent from the previous month but an increase of 12 per cent from October 1999. Its highest closing for October was 16184.68 on the 5th and its lowest was 14422.52 on the 19th.

Exchange Participants

As at 31 October 2000, the total number of Trading Right Holders were 562 (holding 929 trading rights), of which 515 were Exchange Participants (holding 879 trading rights) and 47 were non-Exchange participants (holding 50 trading rights).

An Exchange Participant is an individual or corporation who may trade on or through the Exchange and who is a registered securities dealer with the Securities and Futures Commission.

Market capitalisation

The market capitalisation at the end of October 2000 was HK$4,540,006 million compared with HK$3,587,548 million on the same date last year, an increase of HK$952,458 million or 27 per cent.

Listings

The total number of listed companies was 727 on 31 October 2000 against 694 on 31 October 1999. The total number of NASDAQ stocks (trading status only) was 7 on 31 October 2000.

During the month of October, 5 new companies were listed: MTR Corporation Ltd, Sun East Technology (Holdings) Ltd, Upbest Group Ltd, China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation* and I-Wood International Holdings Ltd; and one deletion occurred: Jardine International Motor Holdings Ltd.
