The average daily turnover for the 21 trading days in June was HK$10,328 million, a decrease of 1 per cent compared with the previous month but an increase of 31 per cent as compared with the HK$7,888 million in June 1999. Total turnover value for the month was HK$216,898 million, compared with HK$219,010 million in the previous month and HK$165,640 million in June 1999. Of this total, HK$56.19 million was contributed by trading in Nasdaq stocks. Seven Nasdaq stocks traded in Hong Kong under the Pilot Programme for Trading U.S. Securities which was introduced on 31 May 2000.
A total of 160,023 million shares changed hands in June, compared with 175,181 million shares in the previous month and 119,061 million shares in June 1999. Of this total, 99,250 shares were contributed by trading in Nasdaq stocks. The average daily turnover by volume was 7,620 million shares, down 9 per cent from the previous month but an increase of 34 per cent when compared with 5,670 million shares in June 1999.
The total number of trades during the month was 2,467,044 which was 2 per cent less than in May. Of this total, the number of trades in Nasdaq stocks was 1,365.
Average daily turnover for the first half of the year was HK$14,399 million, compared with HK$6,339 million in the same period last year. Total turnover by value was HK$1,756,644 million during the first half of the year, compared with HK$767,073 million for the same period last year.
During the first half of this year, the average daily turnover by volume was 12,251 million shares, compared with 4,167 million shares during the corresponding period of 1999. A total of 1,494,573 million shares were traded during the first half of this year, compared with 504,221 million shares during the same period in 1999.
After a two-month downward movement, the market experienced a strong recovery in June especially in the early part of the month.
The All Ordinaries Index at the end of June was 6678.54, an increase of 9 per cent from the previous month and 16 per cent from June 1999. Its highest closing for June was 6816.62 on the 16th and its lowest was 6231.51 on the 1st.
The Hang Seng Index at the end of June was 16155.78, an increase of 10 per cent from the previous month and 19 per cent from June 1999. Its highest closing for June was 16438.42 on the 28th and its lowest was 14941.19 on the 1st.
As at 30 June 2000, the total number of Exchange Participants was 515, of which 500 were trading participants. There were 56 Trading Right Holders who were not Exchange Participants. An Exchange Participant is an individual or corporation who may trade on or through the Exchange and who is a registered securities dealer with the Securities and Futures Commission.
The market capitalisation at the end of June 2000 was HK$4,807,379 million compared with HK$3,590,380 million on the same date last year, an increase of HK$1,217,000 million or 34 per cent.
The total number of listed companies was 717 on 30 June 2000 against 688 on 30 June 1999. The total number of Nasdaq stocks (trading status only) was 7 on 30 June 2000.
During the month of June, 4 new companies were listed: Zida Computer Technologies Ltd, China Unicom Ltd, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd and China Insurance International Holdings Co Ltd; and no deletion occurred.
