The average daily turnover for the 21 trading days in May was HKD10,429 million, a decrease of 6 per cent compared with the previous month but an increase of 42 per cent as compared with the HKD7,351 million in May 1999. Total turnover value for the month was HKD219,010 million compared with HKD187,948 million in the previous month and HKD154,372 million in May 1999.
A total of 175,181 million shares changed hands in May, compared with 119,246 million shares in the previous month and 128,693 million shares in May 1999. Of this total, 33460 shares were contributed by trading in Nasdaq stocks. The average daily turnover by volume was 8,342 million shares, up 19 per cent from the previous month and 36 per cent when compared with 6,128 million shares in May 1999. The total number of trades during the month was 2,521,812 which was 10 per cent more than in April. Of this total, the number of trades in Nasdaq stocks was 556.
Average daily turnover for the first five months of the year was HKD15,245 million, compared with HKD6,014 million in the same period last year. Total turnover by value was HKD1,539,746 million during the first five months of the year, compared with HKD601,433 million for the same period last year.
During the first five months of this year, the average daily turnover by volume was 13,213 million shares, compared with 3,852 million shares during the corresponding period of 1999. A total of 1,334,550 million shares were traded during the first five months of this year compared with 385,160 million shares during the same period in 1999.
The two key market indices continued their downside trend during May, hitting new lows for the year on the 26th. Nevertheless, both managed to rebound somewhat towards the end of the month.
The All Ordinaries Index at the end of May was 6,135.94, a decrease of 5 per cent from the previous month but an increase of 20 per cent from May 1999. Its highest closing for May was 6,648.01 on the 2nd and its lowest was 5,753.58 on the 26th.
The Hang Seng Index at the end of May was 14,713.86, a decrease of 5 per cent from the previous month but an increase of 21 per cent from May 1999. Its highest closing for May was 15,817.76 on the 2nd and its lowest was 13,722.70 on the 26th.
The market capitalisation at the end of May 2000 was HKD4,197,636 million compared with HKD3, 192,890 million on the same date last year, an increase of HKD1,004,746 million or 31 per cent.
The total number of listed companies was 713 on 31 May 2000. The total number of Nasdaq stocks (trading status only) was 7 on 31 May 2000.
During the month of May, no new company was listed but one deletion occurred: Peninsula & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. Meanwhile, 7 new Nasdaq stocks (trading status only) were introduced: Amgen Inc., Applied Materials, Inc., Cisco Systems, Inc., Dell Computer Corporation, Intel Corporation, Microsoft Corporation and Starbucks Corporation.
