Stock Exchange Of Hong Kong April Market Statistics

Market turnover contracted in April with the daily turnover value dropping to HKD6,969 million on the 27th, the lowest for 2000.

The average daily turnover for the 17 trading days in April was HKD11,056 million, a decrease of 26 per cent compared with the previous month but an increase of 23 per cent as compared with the HKD 8,979 million in April 1999. Total turnover value for the month was HKD187,948 million compared with HKD345,797 million in the previous month and HKD170,603 million in April 1999.

A total of 119,246 million shares changed hands in April, compared with 252,114 million shares in the previous month and 99,907 million shares in April 1999. The average daily turnover by volume was 7,014 million shares, down 36 per cent from the previous month but up 33 per cent when compared with 5,258 million shares in April 1999.

The total number of trades during the month was 2,286,915 which was 46 per cent less than in March.

Average daily turnover for the first four months of the year was HKD16,509 million, compared with HKD5,659 million in the same period last year. Total turnover by value was HKD1,320,736 million during the first four months of the year, compared with HKD447,061 million for the same period last year.

During the first four months of this year, the average daily turnover by volume was 14,492 million shares, compared with 3,246 million shares during the corresponding period of 1999. A total of 1,159,370 million shares were traded during the first months of this year, compared with 256,467 million shares during the same period in 1999.

The two key market indices experienced a downside trend during April, hitting a low point for the year on the 17th.

The All Ordinaries Index at the end of April was 6492.52, a decrease of 12 per cent from the previous month but an increase of 19 per cent from April 1999. Its highest closing for April was 7150.70 on the 7th and its lowest was 6189.72 on the 17th.

The Hang Seng Index at the end of April was 15519.30, a decrease of 11 per cent from the previous month but an increase of 16 per cent from April 1999. Its highest closing for April was 16941.68 on the 7th and its lowest was 14762.37 on the 17th.

The market capitalisation at the end of April 2000 was HKD4,430,526 million compared with HKD3,381,296 million on the same date last year, an increase of HKD1,049,230 million or 31 per cent.

The total number of listed companies was 714 on 30 April 2000 against 684 on 30 April 1999.

During the month of April, 5 new companies were listed: PetroChina Co Ltd (a China-incorporated enterprise), Skyworth Digital Holdings Ltd, Fujikon Industrial Holdings Ltd, E. Bon Holdings Ltd and Gay Giano International Group Ltd; and no deletion occurred.
