Statement From NYSE CEO John A. Thain

Date 02/08/2004

Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge today (August 1) at 2 p.m. held a press conference during which he named specific terrorist targets in New York City and Washington, DC. The New York Stock Exchange is one of the institutions that he named. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly held a press conference at approximately 4:30 p.m. today to discuss New York City's continuing efforts to keep all New Yorkers and the New York Stock Exchange safe. I have spoken today with Secretary Ridge and Mayor Bloomberg.

Jim Esposito, Senior Vice President, Security, has been in contact with me throughout the day as well as with the NYPD and the FBI. The NYSE security staff will continue to work with our law enforcement partners, and Homeland Security officials on a 24 hour per day, 7 day a week basis to ensure we maintain the highest levels of security.

The Exchange will continue to be open for business on our normal schedule.

The safety of our employees, members, and everyone who works in the NYSE facilities is our #1 priority and is of the utmost importance to us.

Please be reassured that we remain vigilant and will keep you updated. As a symbol of his ongoing support for the New York Stock Exchange Mayor Bloomberg will ring the Opening BellSM tomorrow morning.
