In the 4th quarter of 2013, SIX Swiss Exchange posted an ETF trading turnover of CHF 20.9 billion which represents an increase of 13% compared to last quarter. This is shown in the report ETF Quarterly Statistics[PDF] published today. During that period, 335'980 transactions were carried out. The average transaction size of CHF 97'393 was a decrease of1.5% on the previous quarter. In the fourth quarter of 2013, 54 new ETFs were listed on SIX Swiss Exchange, amongst them 46 were listed by UBS ETF. At the end of Q4, the ETF segment of SIX Swiss Exchange contained 940 products.
Equities from developed regions again the most actively traded asset class in Q4 2013
In Q4, 9 of the 10 most actively traded ETFs on the Swiss exchange invested in equities from developed regions. In total, ETFs based on equities from developed regions posted a trading turnover of CHF 11.2 billion in Q4, which is nearly 53% of the total turnover of the ETF segment. With CHF 3.2 billion, commodities and precious metals contributed almost 15% of total turnover of the ETF segment.
Highest turnover figures by iShares
The best-performing product provider in Q4 was once again iShares with 53% of turnover, followed by UBS ETFwith 19% and ZKB ETFs with a share of 6%. For the ninth quarter in a row, the iShares SMI (CH) ETF (former CS SMI (CH)) ended the quarter as the most actively traded ETF, with a trading turnover ofCHF 1'062 million. The 2nd most actively traded ETF during the same period was the iShares S&P 500 UCITS, with a trading turnover of CHF 928 million.
Second-best result of all time and new ETF-high
In the year 2013 the ETF segment posted a total turnover of CHF 90.7 billion, which marks the second best result since the launch of ETFs on SIX Swiss Exchange in 2001. Compared with 2012, this represents an increase of 19%. During 2013, 119 new ETFs were launched, of which UBS ETF contributed 63, iShares 13 and SPDR 10 products. This was followed by product listings of Vanguard, db x-trackers and others. As at the end of the year 2013, the number of ETFs listed onSIX Swiss Exchange had reached a new high of 940 ETFs (including 287 in additional trading currencies). At this time, ETFs from 18 providers were traded on SIX Swiss Exchange, for which there were 22 official market makers.
