SIX Swiss Exchange - Q4 2014: Bonds Quarterly Statistics

The latest issue of the "Bonds Quarterly Statistics" report looks at the performance of SIX Swiss Exchange's Bonds segment in Q4 2014.

SIX Swiss Exchange today published the latest edition of its Bonds Quarterly Statistics[PDF]. Turnover in the CHF bonds segment totalled CHF 42.4 billion in the 4th quarter of 2014, an increase of CHF 5.3 billion over the previous quarter. For the whole of 2014, turnover in the secondary market for CHF bonds was up by 1.3% from the previous year to CHF 165.9 billion. The number of transactions in 2014 fell by 0.4% to 504'642 (2013: 506'781). The international bonds segment put in a good performance, with turnover rising 337.9% to CHF 13.0 billion.

Financials continue to rise

Of the CHF bonds, financials continued to gain considerable ground with a trading volume of 63.5 billion (2013: 57.3 billion), accounting for a 38.3% share of the total turnover of CHF bonds. Governments, in contrast, reported lower turnover of CHF 50.7 billion (2013: CHF 53.0 billion); their share of total turnover was 30.6%. The number of primary-listed CHF bonds increased further: on 31 December 2014, there were 1'703 (2013: 1'636).

Issue volume was also up from CHF 67.1 billion in 2013 to CHF 73.5 billion in 2014. Measured by issue volume, Swiss issuers (CHF 46.4 billion) had a larger market share than foreign issuers (CHF 27.1 billion). As at the end of December 2014, the outstanding volume of all CHF bonds totalled CHF 562.5 billion, with CHF 318.6 billion from Swiss issuers and CHF 243.9 billion from foreign issuers. Furthermore, 20 international bonds were listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange with an issue volume totalling CHF 20.0 billion as at the end of December 2014 (2013: CHF 11.7 billion).
