In the third quarter of 2016, the Swiss Exchange recorded an ETF trading turnover of CHF 25.6 billion, which equates to an increase of almost CHF 3.3 billion relative to the previous quarter. This was revealed today in the latest edition of ETF Quarterly Statistics[PDF]. During this period, 212,230 ETF transactions were carried out on SIX Swiss Exchange. At CHF 103'607, the average transaction size is thus somewhat larger than in the previous period. There were 71'280transactions of less than CHF 10'000. Over the course of the third quarter, 37 new ETFs were listed on SIX Swiss Exchange.
Most-traded products
The most-traded ETF, ISHARES S&P 500 UCITS, ended the third quarter with trading turnover of CHF 815.2 million. In the second quarter it had been the second most-traded product. The broad-based ETF thus continues its turnover growth from the previous quarter. Moving up from third to second place is UBS ETF - MSCI EM SF USD A with trading turnover of CHF 743.8 million. Dropping to third place from first place in previous quarters is iShares SMI (formerly CS ETF on SMI) with turnover of CHF 724.7 million. ZKB GOLD ETF (USD) remained among the top 20 highest-traded products in the third quarter, just as in the second quarter. With turnover of CHF 330.5 million, it landed at eighth place.
AMUNDI ETF TOPIX EUR HEDGED is a new listing ranking in 12th place with trading turnover of CHF 287.9 million. There are thus a total of three ETFs in the top 20 on the Japanese market. Another precious metals ETF from iShares made it into the top 20. ISHARES GOLD-HDG CHF took 19th place with trading turnover of CHF 240.1 million. There are now four bond ETFs represented in the top 20. DBX GLBL GOV CHF from db x-tracker also garnered a spot among the top 20. The ETF is comprised of government bonds from 21 industrialized countries and with trading turnover of CHF 237.1 million holds 20th place on the list of the most-traded products.
1'229 listed ETFs
Overall, 37 new ETFs were listed on SIX Swiss Exchange in the third quarter of 2016. As of 30 September, the ETF segment of the Swiss Exchange comprised 1'229 products, 12 of which are actively managed ETFs (a total of 151 are in other trading currencies). The products are listed on the stock exchange by 22 providers, with liquidity provided by 23 official market makers.
The Swiss economy recovered somewhat in the third quarter of 2016. As in the previous year, private consumption was the key driver of growth. Swiss industry's concern over the adjustments to the euro exchange rate will likely continue.
