SIX Swiss Exchange - ETF Quarterly Statistics: 2nd Quarter 2013

This report provides detailed figures regarding the performance of SIX Swiss Exchange's ETF segment in the second quarter of 2013.

In the second quarter of 2013, SIX Swiss Exchange posted an ETF trading turnover of CHF 27.2 billion, as announced in the ETF Quarterly Statistics[pdf], which were published today. The average transaction size of CHF 99'455 was an increase of almost 2% on the previous quarter. In the second quarter of 2013, 23 new ETFs were listed on SIX Swiss Exchange - UBS ETF was the first provider to launch a risk-weighted ETF based on a multi-asset portfolio. As at the end of Q2, the ETF segment of SIX Swiss Exchange contained 919 products.

Equities from developed regions and commodities & precious metals again the most actively traded asset classes in Q2 2013

Six of the ten most actively traded ETFs on the Swiss exchange in Q2 invest in equities from developed regions, followed by three products based on gold and one ETF in the emerging markets category. In total, ETFs based on equities from developed regions posted a trading turnover of CHF 11.5 billion in Q2, which is nearly 43% of the total turnover of the ETF segment. With CHF 8 million, commodities and precious metals contributed almost 30% of total turnover of the ETF segment. For the seventh quarter in a row, the CS ETF (CH) on SMI ended the quarter as the most actively traded ETF, with a trading turnover of CHF 1'575 million. The second most actively traded ETF during the same period was the ZKB Gold ETF, with a trading turnover of CHF 1'007 million.

In the second quarter, iShares became the best-performing product provider for the first time with almost 23%, followed by CS ETF with 22% and UBS ETF with a share of 18%.

919 listed ETFs - a new high

In the second quarter of 2013, 269'977 transactions were carried out on SIX Swiss Exchange. As at the end of June 2013, the number of ETFs listed on SIX Swiss Exchange had reached a new high of 919 ETFs (including 14 in additional trading currencies). At this time, ETFs from 19 providers were traded on SIX Swiss Exchange, for which there were 22 official market makers. On 1 July 2013, iShares took over Credit Suisse's entire ETF division.
