SIX Swiss Exchange: ETF Quarterly Statistics: 1st Quarter 2017

This report provides detailed figures regarding the performance of SIX Swiss Exchange's ETF segment.

In the first quarter of 2017, the Swiss exchange registered a trading turnover in ETFs of CHF 33.1 billion. This represents an increase of 8.1 percent compared to the previous quarter. This was revealed today in the new edition of ETF Quarterly Statistics[PDF].

During the first quarter, a total of 279'623 transactions were carried out in the ETF segment of SIX Swiss Exchange. On average, the transaction size amounted to CHF CHF 118'297, which is slightly higher than in the previous year's quarter.

107'642 trades smaller than CHF 10'000 were registered in the first quarter, which indicates a return of demand for ETFs among private investors. During the first three months of 2017, 16 new ETFs were listed on SIX Swiss Exchange.

Most traded products

The broad ETF ISHARES S&P 500 UCITS starts the year 2017 with a trading turnover of CHF 1'373.7 million during the first quarter, keeping its number one spot of the most traded product. Second place goes to the UBS ETF - MSCI EM SF USD A with a turnover of CHF 1'192.9 million. In third place follows the iShares SMI with a turnover of CHF 912.2 million.

1'218 listed ETFs

Per end of Q1, the ETF segment of SIX Swiss Exchange consisted of 1'218 products, including 12 active ETFs and 112 ETF avilable in additional trading currencies. The products are offered by 23 providers, while 22 official market makers provide liquidity.

A new issuer and market maker

In January, SIX Swiss Exchange was happy to welcome First Trust as a new ETF issuer. First Trust claims to provide investors with alternatives to the existing range of products. The new issuer started with two products listed on the AlphaDEX index family. These two ETFs allow investors to track the performance Swiss and European equities via a fundamental stock selection methodology.

Furthermore, a new ETF market maker joined the Swiss exchange in March. Liquid Capital Management LLP is a specialized fixed income ETF market maker. The London-based company provides bid and ask prices for 24 fixed income ETFs of various issuers.
