Within the size segments of the FTSE ST All-share Index, small cap companies had the best performance in September with the FTSE ST Small Cap Index up 7.02%, followed by the FTSE ST Mid Cap Index gaining by 3.64%. The FTSE ST All-Share Index gained 1.86% in September.
In the 12 months ending with the last trading session of September, the FTSE ST Small Cap Index had gained 20.80%. In comparison, the STI had seen a gain of 14.40% in the same period
Stocks with smaller market capitalisation can sometimes be considered to be more volatile in comparison to larger peers. According to FTSE Group, in the past three years, the FTSE ST Small Cap Index has a volatility of 19.39% in contrast to the same measure for the Straits Times Index (STI) at 14.71%. This is based on annualised weekly log returns. However, looking at the volatility gauges for the past 12 months, volatility is reported to be 14.19% for the FTSE ST Small Cap Index versus 15.18% for the STI. The latter, 12 month gauge is based on annualised daily log returns.
