Singapore International Ferrous Week Returns With Focus On Sustainable Steel

Date 29/04/2022

  • SGX Commodities and Enterprise Singapore to hold second SIFW in-person from 17-20 May, with livestream and video-on-demand options
  • Fastmarkets, S&P Global Platts and TradeWinds return as partners

SGX Commodities, Asia’s most liquid seaborne risk management venue for the ferrous value chain, and Enterprise Singapore (Enterprise SG), will jointly hold the Singapore International Ferrous Week (SIFW) for the second consecutive year following its successful inaugural launch last year.

Themed “Towards Sustainable Steel”, the annual global flagship event for the ferrous metals supply chain will bring together participants across the global ecosystem to chart the way forward as the industry explores growth opportunities in a post pandemic and sustainable world.

Formerly known as the Singapore Iron Ore Week, SIFW will be held over 17-20 May 2022 and will feature a line-up of forums, workshops and social events. The hybrid event will feature in-person sessions at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre in Singapore, alongside livestream and video-on-demand options with interactive and virtual platforms.

The Singapore Iron Ore Forum, the anchor event of SIFW, will return for its ninth edition as Asia’s premier iron ore and steel event. The forum will offer insights into trending topics in the iron ore and steel sector, with a focus on changing global trade flows and practices as well as greater attention to sustainability in an endemic COVID-19 environment.

William Chin, Head of Commodities at SGX Group, said, “We are once again delighted to be partnering with Enterprise Singapore and our long-standing partners to bring the ferrous community together to examine how big trends such as decarbonisation and the metaverse will play out in the commodities space, and discuss the demand and supply outlook as well as key risks that industry players should be paying attention to.”

“Two years since the COVID-19 outbreak, supply chain risks continue to remain elevated, heightened by increased geopolitical tensions, disruption and the regionalisation of trade. At the same time, the global economy is emerging stronger after the pandemic, presenting growth opportunities for the ferrous metals industry, particularly as steel plays a key infrastructure enabler role in the green energy transition. Against this backdrop, SIFW calls for greater collaboration across the ecosystem, especially in the area of sustainability,” he added.

Lee Pak Sing, Assistant Chief Executive Officer of Enterprise SG, said, “Singapore is one of the world’s largest metal and minerals trading hub. Ferrous metal trade in particular is a significant contributor to Singapore’s international trading hub status – it contributes 12.8% of our offshore trade. As part of Trade 2030 strategy, we will double our overall offshore trade to US$2 trillion by 2030. Enterprise Singapore is pleased to co-organise SIFW as the ferrous metal trade flagship event, bringing together industry players across diverse geographies and from different parts of the ferrous value chain.”

SIFW will see leading industry experts Fastmarkets, S&P Global Platts and TradeWinds hold events covering the entire steel-making value chain, focusing on the latest industry developments across iron ore, coking coal, freight and steel.

SIFW underscores Singapore’s status as the leading hub for global commodities trading in Asia and one of the world’s largest metals and minerals trading hubs. Backed by a strong trade infrastructure and its strategic connectivity in the region, Singapore is well-placed to facilitate the growth of global commodity trade flows across Asia. Having pioneered the world’s first iron ore swaps in 2009, SGX Commodities serves the industry as the leading international price discovery and risk management centre for bulk commodities, alongside shipping, rubber, dairy and petrochemicals.
