SIFMA today announced it has appointed Ira D. Hammerman as Executive Vice President and General Counsel. Mr. Hammerman has served as Senior Managing Director and General Counsel at SIFMA since 2004.
“Ira has been an essential part of the management committee here at SIFMA,” said former Senator Judd Gregg, SIFMA CEO. “As we continue our important work during this historical period of regulatory reform, Ira’s experience and leadership will continue to be of great benefit to our members and we’re pleased that he will be taking on these new responsibilities.”
In this role, Mr. Hammerman will oversee SIFMA’s legal advocacy efforts and all legal work will be under his direction.

Prior to joining SIFMA, Mr. Hammerman was a partner at Clifford Chance US LLP, the global law firm, where he specialized in securities regulatory and enforcement matters. His practice focused on US securities regulation of US and foreign financial institutions, including broker-dealers, investment advisers, banks and investment companies. A substantial part of his practice included representation of financial institutions with respect to trading, compliance and enforcement matters.
With nearly thirty years’ legal experience, Mr. Hammerman received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center and has a B.A. from Emory University. He is a member of the District of Columbia and New York Bars.
