SIFMA Hires Scott DeFife As Sr. Managing Director, Government Affairs

The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) today announced it has hired Scott DeFife as senior managing director, government affairs. DeFife and senior managing director, government affairs Richard Hunt will share responsibilities for SIFMA’s legislative strategy. DeFife will officially start in early May.

“With nearly 20 years of Washington experience and his impressive resume and myriad accomplishments, Scott will be a terrific advocate for our association and our industry,” said Marc Lackritz, president and CEO of SIFMA. “We look forward to benefiting from his policy expertise, problem-solving skills and leadership abilities.”

“I’m looking forward to joining SIFMA as it establishes itself as the single, powerful voice of the industry both domestically and globally,” added DeFife. “Encouraging retirement savings and investment, and facilitating more open, competitive and efficient global capital markets are vital and challenging goals that will benefit America’s investors and the nation’s economy.”

DeFife comes to SIFMA with over eighteen years experience in Washington. Most recently, he was senior policy advisor to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), for whom he has worked since 2003. Previously, he served as legislative director to Congressman Bart Gordon (D-TN), a position he also held with Congresswoman Karen McCarthy (D-MO). Off the Hill, DeFife has represented the American Public Power Association. He has also worked for the National Conference of State Legislatures and the Texas Office of State-Federal Relations in advocacy and policy positions related to the budget, taxes and other fiscal issues.

DeFife received his BS from the University of Texas at Austin and a Masters of Public Affairs from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, which is also part of the University of Texas.
