The WSE has completed another survey of the share of different investor groups (foreign investors, Polish institutional investors, Polish individual investors) in trade in financial instruments on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. According to the survey methodology,* the share of each investor group is based on the results of a survey of Polish brokerage houses.
WSE MAIN MARKET – equity trading:
According to the survey, foreign investors stayed in the lead and generated 46% of equity trade on the Main Market in H1 2012, similar to last year. The biggest contribution of all foreign brokers came from the UK (56%), followed once again by French institutions (22%).
Polish financial institutions once again had the second biggest share in equity trading and generated 35% of trade in H1 2012. In this group, market makers made the biggest contribution (32%), followed by investment funds (30%) and pension funds (16%).
The activity of individual investors was also stable. Polish individual investors generated 19% of equity trading on the Main Market in H1 2012, the same as in 2011.
Similar to previous surveys, the contribution of investor groups to equity trading on the WSE’s Main Market remained stable compared to the previous periods.
NEW/CONNECT MARKET:
Polish individual investors stayed in the lead on NewConnect and generated 72% of trading in H1 2012. Importantly, the activity of foreign investors increased substantially. Their contribution to NewConnect trade was 12% in H1 2012 (3% in the previous period), the highest share ever in the history of the market. Polish institutions accounted for 16% of trade on NewConnect in H1 2012. In this group, private companies remained the most important players and generated 30% of equity trading.
DERIVATIVES MARKET:
Polish individual investors also had the dominant position on the derivatives market in H1 2012. Private individuals generated 47% of trade in futures (46% in the previous period) and 55% of trade in options. The contribution of Polish institutions and foreign investors to trade in futures was 36% and 17%, respectively. Foreign investors generated 13% of trade in options in H1 2012 while the share of Polish institutions increased to 32% (from 12% in the previous period).
The survey covered 31 Polish WSE Members who completed questionnaires provided by the WSE. The respondents provided exact figures. The contribution of foreign Exchange Members was estimated under a modified methodology. Trading by market makers and portfolio management operations on behalf of clients were included in the activity of Polish institutional investors. The survey covered session trading on the WSE.
