GPW Main Market
Foreign investors generated the biggest part of trade in equities on the GPW Main Market in 2016, similar to previous years. They contributed 53% of trade in equities in 2016, representing an increase of 2 percentage points year on year.
Domestic institutional investors generated 34% of trade, i.e., 3 percentage points less than in 2015. Investment funds (with a share of 36%) remained the leading group of institutional investors in H2 2016, followed once again by market makers (28%) and pension funds (13%).
Individual investors generated 13% of trade in 2016 (up by 1 percentage point year on year), which suggests that the downtrend observed in the past years has turned. Their share by value also increased (from PLN 48.8 million in 2015 to PLN 49.3 million in 2016) even though overall trade in equities decreased by more than PLN 28 million year on year in 2016 (double-counted).
The growing activity of individual investors accompanied a rising number of active brokerage accounts (the number of accounts as at 31 December 2016 increased by 36 thousand compared to 30 June 2016 and by 5.5 thousand compared to 31 December 2015).
NewConnect
On NewConnect, individual investors remained in the lead and generated 73% of trade in 2016 (down by 1 percentage point year on year). The share of foreign investors in trade was 8% in 2016 (up by 1 percentage point year on year). The share of domestic institutions in trade on the market remained stable year on year at 19% (the share was 4 percentage points higher in 2014). Firms were the leading group of institutions, accounting for 43% of trade in equities on NewConnect in H2 2016. The share of investment funds increased by 10 percentage points year on year to 31%.
Derivatives market
Domestic individual investors were in the lead also on the derivatives market in 2016. Their share in trade on the futures market was 46% (down by 1 percentage point year on year). Their share in trade on the option market was 51% (up by 4 percentage points year on year).
The share of domestic institutions and foreign investors in the trade in futures was 36% and 18%, respectively, in 2016 (representing a decrease of 2 percentage points year on year and an increase of 3 percentage points year on year). Foreign investors accounted for 16% of trade in options in 2016 (up by 4 percentage points year on year) while domestic institutions contributed 33% (down by 8 percentage points year on year). Please note that the share in trade in futures covers all types of futures: index futures, currency futures, single-stock futures, WIBOR futures, and bond futures.

GPW conducted a survey of the share of different investor groups (foreign investors, domestic institutional investors, domestic individual investors) in trade in financial instruments on the market in H2 2016. According to the applied methodology, the share of each investor group is based on the results of a survey of domestic brokerage houses, as well as turnover data of remote exchange members. The activity of market makers and management of clients’ portfolios were included in the category of domestic institutional investors. The survey covered trade on the GPW electronic order book. Annual figures are based on semi-annual numbers.
