SGX’s Senior Advisor, Ang Swee Tian, Inducted Into FIA Futures Hall Of Fame

Date 14/03/2007

Singapore Exchange (SGX) is pleased to announce that Senior Advisor, Ang Swee Tian, has joined the ranks of international futures and options luminaries.

Mr Ang is the first from an Asian Exchange to be inducted into the Futures Industry Association (“FIA”) Futures Hall of Fame.

The FIA Futures Hall of Fame was established to honour and give recognition to individuals for their contributions to the futures and options industry. It is a biennial event which saw 55 industry leaders being honoured at its inaugural ceremony in 2005. Past honourees include Alan Greenspan, former US Federal Reserve chairman; Tom Donovan, former Chicago Board of Trade chief executive officer; Michael Jenkins, the first chief executive of the London International Financial Futures Exchange; Leo Melamed, former Chicago Mercantile Exchange chairman; and Olaf Stenhammar, founder of OMX. This year, 19 individuals from around the world were inducted.

Mr J Y Pillay, Chairman of SGX said, “Swee Tian has made significant contributions to SIMEX, SGX and the Asian futures industry at large. He remains a pillar of strength of the Exchange. We are heartened that FIA recognises his efforts by honouring him with this prestigious award.”

An excerpt from the citation by FIA reads, “Seldom does a single person become so synonymous with an industry in a single country as Ang Swee Tian.”

Mr Ang is a visionary of the futures industry and played a pivotal role in placing Singapore on the world map as home to Asia’s first financial futures exchange. Mr Ang was instrumental in establishing the Singapore International Monetary Exchange (SIMEX) in 1984 and helped build it into a well-respected futures exchange.

Mr Ang led the SIMEX team to successfully launch many innovative products such as the Nikkei 225 Futures and the MSCI Taiwan IndexTM Futures. The overwhelming success of these products accelerated the pace of liberalisation and globalisation of the Asian Financial futures market.

Mr Ang was also part of the founding team that established the world’s first Mutual Offset System (MOS) with Chicago Mercantile Exchange in 1984. Mr Ang’s illustrious career included the successful merger of SIMEX with the Stock Exchange of Singapore (SES) in 1999 with the establishment of the Singapore Exchange. He served as the President of SGX from 1999 to 2005. On his retirement, he took on a new role as Senior Advisor in 2006.
