SGX’s Flagship Retail Education Event To Target New Investors - “My First Stock Carnival” Will Be Held At Vivocity On 26-27 May

Date 24/05/2018

Singapore Exchange (SGX) will be holding its flagship retail education event, My First Stock Carnival, this weekend at VivoCity’s Outdoor Plaza Atrium. This is part of SGX’s ongoing efforts to engage, educate and encourage new investors to embark on their financial literacy journey.

Targeted at “NIBIs” (Not Invested But Interested) aged 18 to 35 years old, the event takes a hands-on, interactive and fun-filled approach to educate investors on how to get started on their investment journey.

Chan Kum Kong, SGX’s Head of Research and Products, Equities and Fixed Income, said, “We are seeing a trend of young investors getting more active in investing. Our data shows that the traded value per month per investor aged 25 years old and younger saw an increase of 32% in the first quarter of 2018 over the same quarter in 2016; the number of trades per month for the same group also saw an increase of 17% over the same time period. Through SGX’s regular investor education and outreach programmes, we hope to encourage more young investors to embark on their investment journey early and on the right footing.”

CGS-CIMB, iFAST Singapore, Lim & Tan, Maybank Kim Eng, Phillip Capital and RHB Securities will be setting up booths at the carnival to help investment newbies open accounts and answer questions they may have about investing.

A SGX ‘My First Stock Guidebook’ will be distributed together with a goodie bag at the carnival, and participants will have the opportunity to interact with industry experts and retail brokers, as well as familiarise themselves with SGX’s investing resources. Participants can also take part in the SGX “Invest Quest” and stand to win STI ETF units sponsored by SGX.

This is the fifth edition of the My First Stock Carnival. Past events held in various locations across Singapore saw a total of nearly 20,000 new investors participating and kickstarting their investment journey.

My First Stock Carnival will be complemented by a week of investment workshops to allow new investors to deep-dive into new investment concepts. The My First Stock Carnival Investment Week to be held at the SGX Auditorium will feature speakers from SGX Academy, broking firms and the financial blogger community in a series of panel discussions held on 28 May, 30 May and 1 June. The panel discussions will cover topics relevant to new and first-time investors, including “Your First Portfolio”, “Different Investing Styles and Finding your Way”, and “Trading, Art or Science?”.
