SGX: STI Sees 26 Stocks Gain In 3Q12

  • In the third quarter of 2012, the STI gained 6.32%, with dividends boosting this gain to 7.48%.
  • The outperforming STI stocks during the third quarter were Fraser and Neave (+26.9%), Global Logistics Properties (+20.1%) and Noble Group (+18.8%).
  • The third quarter saw two STI stocks maintain 12 month trailing divided yields above 5.00%. These two stocks were Starhub with a 12 month yield of 5.38% and SIA Engineering with a 12 month yield of 5.05%.

 

 

 

In the third quarter of 2012, the STI gained 6.32% in price, with dividends boosting the total quarter return to 7.48%. The combination of Singapore Dollar (SGD) appreciation and dividend distributions meant the Straits Times Index (STI) outperformed index peers representing the stock markets of the United States, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong and Australia.

In the case of the ASX 200 and Euro Stoxx 50, the outperformance was marginal, with the STI total return of 7.48% similar to the ASX 200 total return of 7.38% and Euro Stoxx 50 return of 7.29%, in SGD terms. The outperformance was widest to the Nikkei 225 Index which declined by 1.68% on a total return, SGD denominated basis.

STI Stocks in 3Q12

During the third quarter, IHH HealthCare Bhd replaced Neptune Orient Lines in the STI. Of the 30 stocks that currently make up the STI, 26 stocks generated gains in the third quarter and 20 stocks paid a dividend distribution during the quarter.

The outperforming STI stocks during the third quarter were Fraser and Neave (+26.9%), Global Logistics Properties (+20.1%) and Noble Group (+18.8%). With the STI total return at 7.48% in the third quarter, there were 16 stocks that outperformed the STI and 14 stocks that underperformed the STI.

The three stocks that underperformed the STI by the most in the third quarter were Wilmar International (-9.40%), Genting Singapore (-2.84%) and Golden-Agri Resources (-1.49%). The two stocks that most closely resembled the quarterly performance of the STI were Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation and CapitaMall Trust.

Two stocks maintained 12 month trailing dividend yields above 5.00%. These stocks were Starhub with a yield of 5.38% and SIA Engineering with a yield of 5.05%. The table below details the returns of the 30 stocks that make up the STI.
