SGX Sees Volume Growth In November

Singapore Exchange (SGX) reported growth in securities and record volumes in derivatives and commodities for November.

Securities

  • Securities daily average value grew 8% month-on-month to S$1.1 billion and 20% year-on-year.  Total value of securities traded in November increased 3 % month-on-month to S$22.3 billion and 15% year-on-year.  The number of trading days in November 2014 was 20 days whereas October 2014 and November 2013 were 21 days. 
  • November saw 4 listings which raised about S$ 42 million.  There were 47 bond listings that raised about S$19.4 billion in November, compared with 57 bond listings raising S$11.3 billion a year earlier. 

Derivatives

  • Derivatives daily average trading volume rose by 17% month-on-month to 629, 408 contracts and 45% year-on-year. SGX saw a record month for derivatives with more than 12 million contracts, giving an increase of 13% month-on-month and 36% year-on-year. 
  • The total volume of SGX Asian equity index futures was 10.6 million contracts, up 10% month-on-month and 36% year-on-year. SGX FTSE China A50 Futures achieved a record month of 4.8 million contracts, 51% increase month-on-month and 104% year-on-year.  Daily average volume was up 36% month-on-month to 238,477 contracts, and 114 % year-on-year.
  • SGX foreign exchange futures, launched on 11 November last year, traded almost 127, 000 contracts in November this year, a 35% increase month-on-month.  SGX Indian Rupee futures contract also set a new monthly record with 107,051 contracts, a 40% up month-on-month. The recently-launched SGX Chinese Renminbi futures (RMB) futures, namely USD/CNH and CNY/USD futures, saw a total of 12,566 contracts in November.

Commodities 

  • Total commodities saw a record volume of 530,566 contracts, up 26% month-on-month and grew more than six times year-on-year.
  • Total Asiaclear volume was 485,471 contracts, up 40% month-on-month and more than eight times year-on-year.  Iron ore derivatives cleared swaps, futures and options also achieved a record of 475,298 contracts, up 43% month-on-month and more than eight times year-on-year.
