The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET)’s endeavor to honor and encourage philanthropic actions of individuals and organizations becomes fruitful once again this year at the annual SET-sponsored awards presentation in seven areas to 11 philanthropists who have contributed to society.
Over the past 10 years, SET in partnership with seven social organizations, has recognized 78 philanthropists who have contributed to society through 42 social development projects that have nurtured seven fields of Thailand’s development, benefitting over a million Thais as a result.
SET President Kesara Manchusree stated that driven by the vision “To Make the Capital Market ‘Work’ for Everyone”, SET promotes and supports both investors and businesses to have access to and gain benefit from the Thai capital market, while enhancing a sustainable society through the activities of the SET Foundation. This year, SET would like to congratulate the recipients of the 2016 SET social development awards along with the seven social organizations that have contributed tremendously to the Thai society through many facets of social development projects. These awards should be motivation for them to continue their good deeds and cultivate more good people in the Thai society. "
“The social development project has been a key SET undertaking since its inception 10 years ago in 2007. Over the past 10 years, 78 individuals in seven spheres of society have received awards, bringing benefits to millions of Thais,” Kesara added.
Following are the 11 recipients of the 2016 SET social development awards in seven different areas.
1. The library development award as selected by The Thai Library Association has been granted to: The Professor Doctor Kaw Swasdipanich Reading Promotion Foundation for encouraging the correct use of the Thai language; 2) Doungta Jittakarn, a kindergarten teacher at Klong Thom School, Krabi province in the southern part of Thailand, who has sacrificed her energy, time and personal money to promote reading in her school and community, while establishing a librarian youth team that has received a royal award.
2. The education development award recipient as selected by the Professor Sangvien Indaravijaya Foundation has been presented to Professor Dr. Krisana Kraisintu, Honorary Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Medicines, Rangsit University, a Thai pharmacist who has researched and produced an AIDS treatment medicine, the “first” in developing countries.
3. The rural development award as selected by the Population and Community Development Association (PDA) has been granted to The Community Enterprise, Agricultural Demonstration Center, Tha Sao Sub District Community Shop, Kanchanaburi province for its agricultural products distribution center, which has a strong community management system, cultivating the concept of self-sufficiency and enhancing the quality of life for the villagers in the community.
4. This year's urban development awards as selected the Vimuttayalaya Foundation has been presented to: 1) Khammai Saengrat, a local sage, who has shared his unique knowledge with farmers in Chiang Rai and throughout northern Thailand via project which uses earthworms to turn organic wastes into useful fertilizers; 2) Chawarit Chaiprom, a folk philosopher, who teaches the idea that being an agriculturalist means being responsible for the lives of the people in the community, and has also developed a project for cultivating mushrooms in a greenhouse. Both awardees are driving forces in implementing organic farming in Chiang Rai province.
5. The music encouragement award as selected by the Sugree Charoensook Foundation was given to The Yala City Municipality Youth Orchestra, that provides musical opportunities to the youth in three southern border provinces, contributing to building a sense of social harmony among all Thai citizens.
6. The sports promotion award as determined by The Football History Association of Thailand has been granted to 1) Chet Bunpeng, a volunteer who is responsible for the youth football coaching project in Bo Kaeo School, Samoeng district in Chiang Mai Northern Province. He coaches football for Karen hilltribe youth, and has developed their athletic skills at a professional level; 2) Sonthaya Ngamyae, a volunteer who has coached underprivileged youth in Amphur Muang, Surin northeastern province for 10 years, and has also founded Muangchang United FC soccer team.
7. Awards for preventing and solving drug problems in the community and society as selected by the Duang Prateep Foundation has been given to: 1) Nitaya Promphoechuenbun, Founder and Chairperson of the Promjai Development Foundation, who has been dedicated to reducing the drug problem in Klong Toey community for over 30 years; 2) Damrong Boonyang, Head of the Fire Prevention Project of the Duang Prateep Foundation, the leader of network for community disaster relief and the leader of the youth volunteer fire prevention network of Thailand which targets at-risk youth to instill good habits to resist and overcome drug addiction.
At today's event, SET granted THB 2 million to each of these foundations to support their social development activities, so they can carry out their altruistic work which can improve the lives of many in communities nationwide. The 2016 SET social development awards ceremony—being held today at the SET building in Bangkok.
