Trading on CME's GLOBEXÒ electronic trading platform in September reached 17,756,051 contracts, the second highest monthly level on record and an increase of 160 percent compared to September 2001. Year-to-date, GLOBEX volume totaled 131,685,295 contracts, a 135 percent increase over year-ago levels. The record volume month for GLOBEX was July 2002 when 23.3 million contracts changed hands.
For the month of September, average daily volume on CME totaled 2.3 million contracts, with year-to-date volume averaging 2.2 million contracts. Average daily volume in September 2001 was 2.1 million contracts and totaled 1.6 million contracts for the period January-September 2001.
The underlying value of CME trading volume in September totaled $25.2 trillion. Month-end open interest stood at 17.6 million positions, an increase of 26 percent from one year ago. CME's open interest set a new record on Sept. 12 at nearly 20.3 million positions. CME has the largest futures and options on futures open interest of any exchange in the world.
