Senator Professor Mario Monti has accepted, with reservations, the request from the President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano to form a new government. Mario Monti will go back to the President once he has established the new government's program - if he can. The various parties in the Italian parliament have made contradictory demands of him in terms of the program to follow in return for their support.
