This year’s meeting is highlighted by the tremendous year of growth the securities industry has experienced. For 2005, the industry’s projected gross revenue surpasses that of 2004 across the board, with an estimated total gross revenue of $313.5 billion. This year of growth underscores the theme of the meeting, “creating opportunities,” and sets the stage for new opportunities in 2006 and beyond.
“The last few years have brought significant change to the industry, but our transformation is not yet complete,” said Daniel Ludeman, SIA Chairman. “For two and a half intense days, this conference will explore the myriad of ways the securities world is evolving and provide insight into what the future will bring. This is a must-attend event for both securities industry professionals and the media who cover them.”
The 34th annual meeting begins with Wednesday evening’s welcome dinner (November 9). There, the SIA Distinguished Leadership Awards will be presented to individuals that have demonstrated extraordinary leadership and service to the industry. The annual SIA Diversity Leadership Awards will also be announced during the meeting as well as Good Samaritan Awards for individual acts of heroism by members of the industry after Hurricane Andrew. Other topics to be covered include: 2005 accomplishments, 2006 vision and goals, and the unveiling of results from the diversity and an equity ownership surveys.
Ludeman and SIA President, Marc Lackritz, will begin the general session of the meeting on Thursday morning, November 10. Lackritz will focus on ways to create new opportunities for both industry and investors in the ever-changing worlds of regulation, legislation and the marketplace. Ludeman will discuss the association’s accomplishments over the past year in building the investing public’s trust, promoting saving and investing, opening global markets, strengthening investor education, and creating a more diverse industry for employees and clients. James Gorman, SIA’s incoming Chairman, will address the group during Friday morning’s session (November 11), outlining his vision for the association. Other speakers include:
- Christopher Cox, Chairman, SEC, in his debut address to the industry will offer his perspective on the pressing issues confronting the securities industry.
- Ken Dychtwald, President, Age Wave, will explore how the demographic shift towards a maturing marketplace will transform retirement and financial services.
- Malcolm Gladwell, author of Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking and The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, will share the particular personality types who are natural pollinators of new ideas and trends, the people who create the phenomenon of word of mouth.
- Robert Arnott, Editor, financial analyst, and chairman, Research Affiliates LLC and Jeremy Siegel, Ph.D., Russell E. Palmer professor of finance, Wharton School, will square off in a bull vs. bear debate over what’s to come in 2006.
- John Thain, Chief Executive Officer, New York Stock Exchange, will discuss recent developments at the NYSE resulting in opportunities for the industry, securities professionals, and investors.
- Robert Greifeld, President and Chief Executive Officer, The NASDAQ Stock Market, Inc., will discuss how forces of competition have changed the global competitive landscape for trading and listing equities and what the industry, investors and public companies can expect in the next decade.
- Robert Glauber, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, NASD, will deliver an update of the NASD and the impact of the organization on the securities industry.
- Ellyn McColgan, President, Fidelity Investments, will explain the underlying trends driving the transformation of America’s brokerage service industry and the key steps that will determine success – or failure – for investment service providers.
