Securities & Investment Institute Becomes Chartered Institute For Securities & Investment

Date 04/11/2009

The SII is pleased to announce that from 1st November 2009 it changed its name to the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI).

The gaining of Chartered status is the most significant change for members since the formation of the Securities Institute in 1992. The broadening scope of the Institute’s work led to a change of name in 2004 to the Securities & Investment Institute. In the past few years, the growth and development of the Institute has seen staff representatives appointed in Scotland and Ireland and the opening of offices in four major financial centres globally: Mumbai, Dubai, Shanghai and Singapore.

Ruth Martin, Managing Director of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment said: “The foundations that have enabled us to apply to become Chartered were laid by the solid work that many members have undertaken in building our high quality exams, learning materials, CPD seminars and conferences. These have contributed to enabling us to demonstrate a track record in all strands of professionalism, which is vital to our ultimate success.”

In the first year that the Institute was formed from the London Stock Exchange (LSE), Sir Andrew Hugh Smith, then Chairman of the LSE, commented: “The Securities Institute may be new but it is based on a very old idea, one that is as sound and fresh as ever. It is the integrity and professional ability of individual practitioners that really matters – all else is of transient importance.” His words are as relevant today as they were then.

Crucially, the core values of the Institute and its mission remain. The Royal Charter presents the objectives for which the Institute is established: “…to promote for the public benefit the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the field of securities and investments, to develop high professional, educational and ethical standards for practitioners in securities and investments and to promote such standards in the UK and overseas, and to act as an authoritative body for the purpose of consultation and research in matters of educational or public interest concerning securities and investments.”

For certain qualified existing members, the CISI is offering a 12 month window to gain personal Chartered status once CISI is launched. The CISI wishes to recognise the value of long service in membership, which includes adherence to the code and commitment to CPD, without which we would not have secured our Charter. Consequently there are important criteria to be met to secure Chartered status individually.

In all instances, the transition to individual Charter must be accompanied by proof of ethical compliance through our ethics test (IntegrityMatters) and at least 12 months’ CPD logged using the CISI’s own scheme, or one that has been accredited by the CISI. Further information on this can be obtained form www.cisi.org/charteredstatus.
