Santander de Negócios Portugal Issues The First Certificate On The FTSEurofirst 80 Index

Date 05/05/2006

Banco Santander de Negócios Portugal (BSN Portugal) has chosen FTSEurofirst 80 as the basis for its first certificate on a euro zone index. It becomes the first financial institution to list a FTSEurofirst product in Portugal. The FTSEurofirst 80 certificate, which matures on 16 January 2009, is listed on Euronext Lisbon.

Santander de Negócios Portugal choice of the FTSEurofirst 80 will enhance the growing reputation of the index in Portugal and also reflects its growing popularity in Europe. Providing broader, more accurate sector coverage than competing indices, the FTSEurofirst 80 delivers a performance that tracks the overall performance of euro zone equity markets more closely.

Nuno Caramujo, Head of Warrants & Exchange Derivatives at Santander de Negócios Portugal, said: "Our certificate, which matures in just under three years, gives investors optimum exposure to the euro zone's equity markets. Our decision to use the FTSEurofirst 80 as the underlying index means that the product's performance will closely match the overall performance of those markets, regardless of the investor's holding period. This decision is consistent with our policy of providing customers with best of breed financial products".

Xavier Leroy, FTSEurofirst Director at Euronext, and Imogen Dillon Hatcher, Managing Director, FTSE Group, in a joint statement added: "The intrinsic qualities of the FTSEurofirst 80 index – accuracy, simplicity and innovation – have once again proved a winning combination. The fact that Santander de Negócios Portugal, part of Grupo Santander, one of Europe's top financial institutions, has chosen FTSEurofirst 80 as the euro zone index for a major development project in Portugal is most certainly a great success for us".
