Despite a mid-month surge, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended September slightly in the red while the S&P 500® declined 1%. Not surprisingly, the S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures index gained 11%.

U.S. fixed income indices were also weak across the board, as both medium-and long-term treasury yields increased.

Sectoral performances were mixed. Consumer Staples led among the 10 sectors of the S&P 500 in September, gaining 1%. Energy and Consumer Discretionary brought up the rear, declining 8% and 3% respectively. |
